34Brief History of the School

In 1964, the Mercy Sisters established St. Paul's Secondary School in Oughterard.  The school was the third co-educational school in Co. Galway.  It began as two rooms in St. Joseph's Convent and gradually expanded into other rooms in the convent and some prefabricated buildings in the school yard.  However as numbers increased it became obvious that a completely new building was needed.  On October 5th 1990 Mrs. Mary O'Rourke, Minister for Education laid the foundation stone for the new St. Paul's Secondary School which was opened on 12th of  December 1991.22
