Every pupil in St. Paul's does Transition Year. The TY is in the school a very long time, over 20 years, and it is part of what we are. In drawing up the timetable for TY we are mindful of the fact that we want the TYs to be exposed to a combination of core Curricular work in subjects like Maths, English, Irish, European language and PE for the duration of the school year as well as subject sampling for ten weeks. All students sample the full range of optional subjects available for Senior Cycle in the school. The principle underlying this is that students will make informed choices for Senior Cycle.
Pupils take a variety of modules. In choosing modules we take into account the educational value and personal/social development to the student of such a module. Modules for the school year 2009/2010 include Survival Cookery, Recreational Sports, First Aid, Driving Theory, Green Flag and Music.
The students take part in various other events during TY. The most important of these are:
- An outdoor pursuits outing for three days to Recess where the students do canoeing, surfing, hill-climbing, rock-climbing and orienteering.
- Production of a Musical where all aspects of the show are undertaken by the students from the actual acting, singing, props, Art work, programme production, costumes, make-up and backstage management. The Musical is an action-based project which each TY group has successfully taken on since 1989.
- European School Tour where TY students visit a European city where they visit sights of cultural and historical interest. This years TY are going to Barcelona.
- A Law Course where a barrister visits the school and explains the Irish Law System ending with the students acting out a mock trial. As a follow-up the students visit the Four Courts in Dublin.
